Position Overview

HRecruit is recruiting an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer for a direct placement opportunity in Huntsville, Alabama, supporting the design and development of advanced defense systems.

This position focuses on mechanical design, structural analysis, and product development for complex electromechanical systems used in military applications, including Remote Weapons Stations (RWS) and Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS).

The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on mechanical design experience, proficiency in SolidWorks or PTC Creo, and expertise in finite element analysis (FEA), mechanical calculations, and engineering drawing development. This individual will work closely with systems, electrical, software, and project engineering teams to develop innovative, reliable, and manufacturable solutions that meet technical, performance, and schedule requirements.

This is a senior technical position that also involves mentoring junior engineers and contributing to engineering design reviews and product development decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical designs and engineering solutions that meet defined technical, performance, manufacturing, and schedule requirements.
  • Create and refine 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed 2D engineering drawings using SolidWorks or PTC Creo.
  • Perform finite element analysis (FEA), structural evaluations, and engineering calculations to support mechanical design and product development.
  • Design lightweight, structurally sound mechanical components and assemblies for demanding military applications.
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles, including strength of materials, structural mechanics, and design for manufacturability.
  • Develop mechanical designs involving sheet metal, weldments, and complex mechanical assemblies.
  • Collaborate with systems engineers to identify, evaluate, and incorporate system-level requirements into mechanical designs.
  • Work closely with electrical, software, and other engineering disciplines to ensure effective integration of mechanical components within complete systems.
  • Support mechanical and system-level testing, evaluation, and verification activities to demonstrate compliance with design requirements.
  • Prepare and review engineering documentation, technical reports, calculations, and design packages for formal design reviews.
  • Partner with project engineering teams to deliver design solutions within established schedules and budgets.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and professional development support to junior engineers.
  • Investigate complex mechanical design challenges and develop practical, innovative engineering solutions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 8+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience, with a strong emphasis on mechanical design and product development.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and/or PTC Creo Parametric.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills, including engineering calculations involving basic physics, structural mechanics, and strength of materials.
  • Strong experience developing, reviewing, and checking detailed 2D engineering drawings.
  • Experience designing mechanical components and assemblies involving sheet metal and weldments.
  • Ability to develop mechanical designs that meet defined engineering and performance requirements.
  • Strong technical writing, documentation, and reporting skills.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership skills and a commitment to mentoring and developing junior engineers.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
  • Ability to work on-site in Huntsville, Alabama.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing or developing Remote Weapons Stations (RWS) or other military weapons systems.
  • Experience with combat vehicle turret design, development, or integration.
  • Experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) contracts or defense-related engineering programs.
  • Experience applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Familiarity with military weapons systems, including the M240B, M2HB, M134D, MK19, MK47, MK52, M230LF, MK44, Javelin, APKWS, or Hellfire.
  • Experience with design for additive manufacturing (DfAM).
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% to support live-fire exercises or related program activities.
