Position Overview
We are recruiting Mid-Level and Senior Mechanical and Tooling Design Engineers with space hardware experience for direct placement opportunities in Huntsville, Alabama. These positions support aerospace vehicle programs in a fast-paced, customer-facing engineering environment.
The role focuses on the design, development, and documentation of tooling for manufacturing, ground support, and test operations supporting space hardware programs. Engineers will work directly with the customer’s engineering team and use PTC Creo and Windchill PLM as primary tools for mechanical design and engineering data management.
Day-to-day work includes generating and redlining 2D drawings and 3D models in PTC Creo in accordance with ASME Y14.5 and managing associated data through Windchill PLM. Candidates should be capable of taking a set of performance requirements, developing a conceptual design, and maturing that design into production-ready drawings and models while maintaining strong attention to detail and data integrity.
Responsibilities
- Apply mechanical design techniques to conceptualize, model, and draft tooling and hardware solutions based on customer requirements and feedback.
- Use PTC Creo and Windchill PLM daily as primary tools for design work and data management.
- Manage CAD data, product structures, and engineering change workflows within Windchill PLM while maintaining configuration control and audit readiness.
- Generate tooling and mechanical designs for space hardware equipment.
- Create mechanical drawings and models in accordance with ASME Y14.5 standards using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Required Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Active Secret security clearance required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Manufacturing Engineering.
- Experience with space hardware, flight hardware, ground support equipment, or test hardware. Experience may be gained through internships, co-ops, or professional experience.
- Proficiency in PTC Creo, including parametric modeling, assembly design, and drawing creation and editing.
- Ability to create and redline 2D drawings and 3D models in compliance with ASME Y14.5.
- Proficiency in Windchill PLM, including document and CAD data management, workflow and change management, and product structure.
- Experience with mechanical design or tooling development.
- Ability to work independently, remain self-directed, and make sound engineering judgments with minimal supervision in a dynamic, customer-facing environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Model-Based Definition (MBD) practices.
- Experience as a Windchill PLM administrator or super user, including user and role management, access control configuration, workflow customization, and system troubleshooting.
- Experience enforcing PLM governance standards such as part numbering schemes, lifecycle states, and baseline/release processes.
About the Opportunity
This direct placement opportunity is designed for experienced mechanical and tooling engineers interested in applying their skills to aerospace vehicle and space hardware programs. The role provides hands-on involvement with flight and ground support equipment while working extensively with PTC Creo, Windchill PLM, mechanical design, tooling development, and engineering configuration management.
Candidates will work in a collaborative, customer-facing environment where they can take designs from initial performance requirements and concepts through production-ready drawings and models.
